Dementia is a disease of the brain characterized by progressive deterioration in brain function including memory, learning, orientation, language, comprehension and judgment. The irreversible decline in intellectual and physical functioning affects the person with dementia and causes significant distress to their family and carers.
Moreover, dementia is not merely a problem of memory. It reduces the ability to learn, reason, retain or recall past experience. Dementia also results in a progressive decline of cognitive abilities, poor self-healthcare, dependency, wandering, aggression and difficult behaviours.
Although a high proportion of elderly with dementia are cared for by their families at home; the onset of behavioral problems can be challenging and is one of the main reasons to start looking for help.

Dementia cannot be cured, but it can be treated, particularly in its early stages. A prompt diagnosis is important in order to limit the progression of the disease.
Your first port of call is almost certain to be your regular doctor who may refer to a memory clinic.
At a Memory Clinic, your loved one will be given a baseline assessment to establish their current memory problems. This will be through a series of tests to check their ability to remember facts and retain information, which will give an initial insight into their mental capabilities.
Nightingales Medical Trust runs Memory Clinics at multiple locations. Psychiatrists and Psychologists at these clinics are trained and equipped to assess your loved one.

The Need for Day Care: Compared to the magnitude of the prevalence of the disease, the support services for Persons with Dementia and their families is almost non-existent in India. As a result, the burden of caring for a person with dementia is entirely met by the family. Taking care of a loved one with Dementia full time can be tough for the family. Round-the-clock routines cause isolation from friends and family. Financial hardships due to high costs of care also takes a toll on the family.
Nightingales Trust Day Care Centres:
Nightingales Medical Trust has established Day Care Centres for Elderly and Persons with Dementia in various locations across Bangalore and Hyderabad. The facilities support Activities of Daily Living and psychosocial needs of persons with dementia in a safe elder-friendly environment by trained mental health professionals. Cognitive and physical rehabilitation, opportunities for socialization and peer interaction are provided at these Centres. Thus the senior citizen is ensured a safe and friendly environment while the family gets respite from their caregiving duties for the day.

There may come a time when the person with Alzheimer's disease or dementia will need more care than can be provided at home. During this stage, it becomes necessary to provide 24-hour supervision to keep the person with dementia safe. As the disease progresses into the late-stages, round-the-clock care requirements become more intensive.
Making the decision to move into a residential care facility may be very difficult. The questions below may be helpful when determining if a move to residential care is a good option:
- Is the person with dementia becoming unsafe in his / her current home?
- Is the health of the person with dementia or my health as a carer at risk?
- Are the person's care needs beyond your physical abilities?
- Are you neglecting work responsibilities, family and yourself?
- Would the structure and social interaction at a care facility benefit the person with dementia?
Even if you planned ahead with the person for a move, making this transition can be a stressful experience. You may feel guilty and wonder if you are doing the right thing. These feelings are common. Keep in mind, that regardless of where the care takes place, the decision is about making sure the person with Dementia receives the care needed.
NMT's Residential Dementia Care centres are designed with the Person with Dementia in mind. Our team can help make the transition to residential care smooth and hassle free.
