Rural Mobile Medicare Program

Program Manager: Dr. Vasantha

In India, 70% of elders live in rural areas, where even basic medical facilities are not easily available. Under this project, the Nightingales Medicare van equipped with medical supplies, a doctor, a nurse and a volunteer attend to the health complaints of the elderly living in the outskirts of Bangalore. The team visits three centres on a pre-determined schedule, dispensing basic care and free medicines wherever required. Cases requiring specialised services are referred to nearby hospitals.

Since the programme’s inception in 2006, more than 26,622 cases have been attended to by this programme. On an average, nearly a thousand health complaints are tended to every month. Most of the complaints are of general body aches, weakness, cough, cold, fever, etc. A few of the cases also include those typical of old age like diabetes, hypertension, stroke and bronchial asthma.

The Rural Mobile Medical Programme has made a great impact on the health of the elderly in the villages. Since the services are regular, our team is now well-received by the elderly in the villages.

Beneficiary Speaks

“Doctors coming from Nightingales are giving regular medical check-up to all the elders in our village. We are greatly benefited from this service.”

-Mrs. Jayamma, 70 years, Arakere Village
