Our History

In January 1996, the promoters of Nightingales Medical Trust (NMT), being healthcare professionals, identified a lacuna in the healthcare delivery system for elders and thus set up the Nightingales Home Health Services (NHHS). NHHS is a unique model that provides healthcare services at the doorsteps of the elderly. This much-needed service proved to be a great success and gained public appreciation.

While providing this service, the founders were moved by the plight of many elders who needed not just medical attention, but also emotional and societal fulfillment. Nightingales Medical Trust was established in 1998 with a vision of fulfilling these needs.

The first project of Nightingales Medical Trust was the Nightingales Elders Enrichment Centre – a centre where senior citizens gather to interact with one another, discuss issues, learn new activities and enjoy their sunset years.

With the Nightingales Elders Enrichment Centre catering to the local, middle-income families, Sandhya Kirana was set up as a daycare centre for impoverished elders – some of whom are destitute. During the day, their healthcare, nourishment and recreational needs are looked after.

Over the course of time, the founders also saw a need for addressing the exploitation and abuse of the elderly. The Elders Helpline was set up in partnership with the Bangalore City Police. This helpline provides free assistance to senior citizens who have been cheated, abused or harassed.

With three unique models in place and with increasing impact, Nightingales has added many more projects to its banner. We have now blossomed into a hub that looks after elders while creating awareness about our cause.
